MEET JOE
Joe attended middle and high school in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. He enlisted in the United States Army as an Infantryman, serving two enlistments for seven years. On April 26, 2004, while deployed in Baghdad, Iraq, Joe was severely injured by an explosion due to enemy activity. He spent the next 20 months recovering at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, enduring 3rd-degree burns over 40% of his body and permanent disabilities to his hands.
While at the hospital, Joe's recuperation was enhanced when former coaches and classmates visited him. This community support helped Joe on his road to recovery and is foundational to his belief in building communities in Northwest ISD that celebrate students' accomplishments and rally around to show support when students, families, and community members are in need.
After Joe’s military retirement, he earned a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences degree from the University of North Texas with academic focuses in Rehabilitative Studies, Nonprofit Management, and Public Administration, along with a minor in Political Science.
Joe is a member of every PTA in Northwest ISD and previously served as Advocacy Chair for the Northwest ISD Council of PTAs. In recognition of his work, Joe and the NISD Council were awarded Texas PTA’s 2021 Outstanding Advocate for Children of the Year. Additionally, Joe serves on several NISD committees, including the Long Range Planning Committee, Board Policy Committee, Advocacy Committee, and Special Education Parent Advisory Council, along with serving as a NISD Community Ambassador.
Joe’s wife is an elementary teacher in NISD and their son is enrolled in Northwest’s STEM Academy. Currently, Joe serves on the Dallas Mavericks Advisory Council, and volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters, NISD Council of PTA’s Advocacy, NISD Angel Tree, NISD Back-to-School Fair, and the Northwest ISD Education Foundation.
